The uniqueness of fingerprints comes from their formation process.
Between the 10th and 15th weeks of fetal development, fingerprints begin to form. Genes determine the basic pattern type, but the detailed ridge paths, bifurcations, endpoints, and pore distributions are influenced by random factors such as amniotic fluid pressure and fetal movement. Even identical twins, who share the same genes, have completely different fingerprint minutiae due to their different positions in the womb – this is the scientific basis of “uniqueness.”
